| PIRKL | JOSEPH | BIOGRAPHY | | BOOK - HISTORY OF RICE & STEELE COUNTIES VOL I & II 1910.
Joseph Pirkl, a thrifty farmer of Blooming Prairie township,
was born in Bohemia, February 12, 1856. He is a son of Bernard
and Josephine (Matejcek) Pirkl. The father was born
May 8, 1824, and the mother, February 24, 1825. They came to
America in 1870, locating in Wisconsin, where they remained
for one year. They then moved to Steele county and located in
Summit township, where the father was engaged in farming all
his life. He died May 5, 1881. The mother died February 12,
1890. Joseph received his early education in Bohemia. He
immigrated to America with his parents in 1870. He was en-gaged
in agricultural pursuits on his father's farm until twenty-four
years of age. He then bought 120 acres of land in section
16, Blooming Prairie township, to which purchase he added until
he now has 200 acres. He erected buildings on this land, made
all necessary improvements, and has been engaged in general
and diversified farming ever since. Mr. Pirkl was married May
23, 1879, to Josephine Strancky. She is a daughter of Joseph
and Josephine (Skalicky) Strancky. Fourteen children have
been born to them, viz.: Marie R., born June 4, 1880, died March
14, 1881; Joseph, born August 14, 1881; Marie, born July 11,
1882, died July 14, 1885; Adolph, born April 26, 1884, died July
2, 1890; Josephine,' born December 26, 1885, died February 15,
1907; Anna, born February 26, 1887, died June 8, 1894; Marie,
born June 25, 1889; Matilda, born May 19, 1891, died September
6, 1894; Frank, born January 16, 1893; John, born June 14,
1895; Albert, born December 28, 1896; Ludmila, born January
24, 1900; Albina, born and died the same day; Adolph, born and
died October 4, 1901. Mr. Pirkl is a Democrat. In religious
faith he adheres to the Catholic Church. He is a stockholder
in the Union Creamery. He makes a specialty of breeding
Shorthorn and Durham cattle, and has met with a marked degree
of success in the enterprise. He is a progressive farmer and a
good citizen.

OWATONNA - Victor A. Pirkl, 65, of Owatonna and formerly of Faribault, died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at Mille Lacs Health Services. Onamia.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Owatonna, with the Rev. Thomas Hargesheimer officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Owatonna Veterans Organization.
Victor Pirkl, the son of Ben and Laura Duchene Pirkl, was born Oct. 16, 1933 in Faribault. He graduated from Faribault High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army for three years. In 1958, he began working at a service station in Faribault, for Standard Oil. He married Rose LaCanne on May 9, 1959, at Sacred Heart Church, Faribault. In 1959, Standard Oil in Owatonna offered him a position as a delivery man of bulk farm petroleum products. The couple moved to Owwatonna in 1961. In the early 1970s, he was promoted to commissioned agent for Standard Oil. In 1973, Victor and Rose Pirkl became owners of the bulk Standard Oil Service, at which became Pirkl Oil. In 1982, the couple purchased the Phillips Services Station at 401 N. Cedar in Owatonna. In 1985, they converted it to a Fuel and Food Convenience Store. He retired Jan. 1, 1999. He was a member of the Elks, Blooming Prairie Country Club, and St. Joseph Church.
He survived by his wife, Rose; one son, Gregory (and Ann) Pirkl, of Owatonna; two daughters, Jeanne (and Art) Kosieradzki of Lakeville, and Rhonda Pirkl of Owatonna; two brothers, Bernard (and Pat) Pirkl of Faribault, and Bert Pirkl of Andover; one sister, Bernice (and James) Dee of Rochester; five grandchildren; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two nephews."

Pirkl, 79, of Route 1, Ellendale, were held Saturday at 2:30 p. m. in the Geneva Methodist church with Rev. John White officiating. Burial was in the Geneva cemetery. Mrs. Pirkl died last Wednesday in the Owatonna Nursing Home of complications following a stroke. Born Evelyn Montanye July 22, 1884, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Montanye, she was a lifetime resident of Geneva township. She married Mr. Pirkl Nov. 17, 1919, in Albert Lea. Survivors include her husband, one son, Zeral Pirkl of Route 1, Ellendale, one daughter, Mrs. Oliver (Ethel) Olson of Hartland, three grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Olive Wangen of Geneva and Mrs. Charles (Hilda) Hamilton of Sheldon, Wis. Pirkl, Rt. 2, Blooming Prairie, died Wednesday, July 3, at his home He was 96. Mr. Pirkl was born June 14, 1895, in Blooming Prairie Township. He served as a corporal in the Signal Corps in France from 1918-19. On Feb. 23, 1927, he married Frances Wondra in Litomysl. Mr. Pirkl farmed. During the 1930s and 1940s, he was clerk of Summit Township and served on the board of the Summit Creamery Association. He was a life-long member of Holy Trinity Parish, Litomysl, serving as a trustee of the church for about 20 years, including when the current church was built. He was also a member of the choir and the Litomysl Mission Society. Mr. Pirkl was a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1918, and of the American Legion and VFW. He is survived by his wife, Frances; a son, John F. of Racine, Wis.; two daughters, Sister Margaret and Sister Franchon, both of Rochester; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 6:30 p. m. Sunday at Holy Trinity Church, Litomsyl. The Revs. Vern Trocinski and James Buryska will officiate. The American Legion and VFW will assist as Honor Guard. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p. m. Saturday at Brick-Postlewaite Funeral Home and an hour before the service Sunday at the church. The Reverend Joel Xavier officiated. Interment was in the Geneva Cemetery. Zeral died Sunday, December 1, 2002, at his home in Geneva, MN. He was 82 years old. Zeral was born in Albert Lea, MN on October 5, 1920, the son of Alexander J. and Eva (Montanye) Pirkl. He attended the Farr Country School. He had farmed near Geneva, MN before retiring and then lived at St. Olaf Lake and Geneva, MN. Zeral was a member of the Community Lutheran Church. Zeral was married to Wilma Wildeman on February 8, 1986 at the Salem Lutheran Church, Albert Lea. Zeral was a devoted farmer and enjoyed fishing and traveling. He enjoyed the many special times he could spend with his grandchildren. Pirkl, the daugher of Anton and Ludmilla (Prokopec) Kubicek was born on August 14, 1904 at home in Summit Township, rural Blooming Prairie, MN. Marie was one of four sisters, along with four brothers. She attended country school in rural Summit Township, St. Mary's in Owatonna, and Owatonna High School. Marie graduated from Teachers Normal Training School in 1922 and furthered her education through correspondence courses from the University of Minnesota and Mankato State College. Marie taught school for 10 years; 5 years in rural school in Steele and Freeborn County's and, beginning in 1958, for 5 years at St. Isidore School at Litomysl. Marie was an active 4-H leader and taught CCD classes at Litomysl and St. Mary's School in Owatonna. Marie married Albert Pirkl in 1927 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Litomsyl. The couple farmed in rural Blooming Prairie, together the couple raised four children. In 1963 the couple moved to Owatonna. Marie continued teaching; doing substitute work at St. Mary's and also tutored children in her home. Marie had a love for gardening, cooking, baking and playing cards. She was a member of the Owatonna Garden Club, Hospital Auxiliary and the Retired Rural School Teachers oganization, St. Blanche Guild, Sacred Heart Pinochle Club, Litomysl Mission Society. In her later years she took much interest in the welfare of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Marie is survived by three sons, Myron and Marie Pirkl of Blooming Prairie, Meinard and Kathleen Pirkl of Hendersonville, ND, and Daniel and Karen Pirkl of Owatonna; daughter, Romana (Skarvan) Wesely and Donald Wesely of Owatonna 28 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Gertrude and Ray Horecka of Owatonna. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, in 1970; 2 grandchildren; 2 sisters; and 4 brothers. Pirkl, former Steele county farmer and Summit resident. Pallbearers were John and Albert Pirkl, Joe and Vince Wondra and Peter and Frank Rysavy. The 82 year old retired Mason City Brick and Tile company employee was a member of the Western Bohemian Fraternal Association and St. Joseph's church. He married Mary Wondra in Summit, July 27, 1890, and the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1940. They moved to Mason City 36 years ago. Born in Czechoslovakia October 26, 1862, he came to the United States at the age of five with his parents. After settling on a farm in Wisconsin they moved to a farm near Blooming Prairie. Surviving are Mrs. Pirkl: a daughter, Mrs. W. G. Thompson, two sons, Frank B. Pirkl and Mark P. Pirkl; four grandchildren, Howard F. Born April 19, 1882, Anna Jansa lived with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Jansa, until her marriage to Joseph Pirkl July 19, 1909. She is survived by her husband; two children, Josephine and Walter; her mother, Mrs. Albina Jansa; two sisters, Mrs. Henry Spatenka of Owatonna, and Miss Helen Jansa at home, and one brother, William Jansa. Final tribute was paid Monday morning for Mrs. Joseph Pirkl, 85, who died at her home last week Thursday afternoon after a short illness. Highly respected and thought of among all who knew her, Mrs. Pirkl’s sudden death came as a distinct shock to her large number of friends and acquaintances within the community. The service, a solemn high mass, was conducted at Sacred Heart Church at 10 o’clock by the Rev. Urban Neudecker. Father Francis Paukert, of Holy Trinity Church, served as deacon and Father Snyder of Medford was sub-deacon. Interment followed in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Somserset. The former Josephine Stransky was born in Czechoslovakia December 16, 1860, and came to America and Steele County at the age of 17. She married the late Joseph Pirkl in May 1879 at the Holy Trinity Church and they farmed in Blooming Prairie Township until 1927. They retired in 1927 and moved to Owatonna on South Oak Street where she lived until her death. Mr. Pirkl died September 12, 1942. Surviving are four sons, Joseph of Owatonna, Frank of Baudette, Minn., John of Summit and Albert of Blooming Prairie Township, and two daughters, Mrs. John (Mary) Pelinka and Miss Libbie Pirkl of Owatonna. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Eight children preceded her in death. Pallbearers were six grandsons including Joseph, Jerome, Myron and John Pirkl, and G. S., and John Pelinka. Attending the service from other cities were a large gathering of friends from Blooming Prairie and the following sons and daughters: Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Pelinka and Ray Benson, Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Thompson, Mrs. Frank Pirkl, Sr., Frances Pirkl, Mrs. Albert Schubert, Mason City, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pirkl and son, Jerome, Baudette, and Jeanette Pirkl of Winona.

Funeral services for Frank Alois Pirkl, 82, and for more than 65 years a Steele County resident, will be held this morning at ten o’clock at his home in Clinton Falls with the Rev. Miles O. Wolfe officiating. Burial will be made in the Bohemian National Cemetery with sons and brother-in-law as pallbearers. Mr. Pirkl died at his home in Clinton Falls Township Wednesday morning at 7:30 o’clock. He was 82 years of age. Mr. Pirkl was born in Czechoslovakia March 19, 1853, and was married there to Anna Fiebigar in 1879. They came to America in 1879 and settled on a farm in Steele county and had resided there since. Mr. Pirkl was widely known in the county and active in local affairs for many years. Surviving are his wife; three sons, Frank, Alexander and James, and five daughters, Anna, Agnes, Emma, Ida and Mrs. Earl Zick. Three sons preceded him in death.

Mr. Pirkl, the son of Frank and Mary Benish Pirkl, was born Jan. 12, 1892, in Deerfield. On Nov. 12, 1920, he was united in marriage to Margaret O'Neil at the Immaculate Conception church in Faribault. Pirkl, William and Myrtle. William J. Pirkl was born to Ignac (1842-1931) and Zofie (1845-1899) Pirkl on July 7, 1886, in Owatonna, MN. Both of his parents were from Bohemia. His mother died when Bill was 13. Myrtle was born on June 13, 1883, to William and Margaret (McCarthy) Russell in Dodge County. Her mother died in childbirth and, since her father was unable to take care of her, she was adopted by Harrison and Clara Morris. Bill went to a country school in West Concord and didn’t finish 6th grade. At the age of 14 he went out to work and, at that time, the top wages were $32.50 per month. In 1910 he went to South Dakota where he took up a claim and farmed on it. He also worked for a building contractor and rode a bike 7 miles each way to work. Later he got a pony and then a road cart. In 1911 he went back to West Concord and stayed with H. H. Morris. They had an adopted daughter, Myrtle, who taught in a country school. On June 28, 1911, they were united in marriage, after which they moved to Owatonna where Bill operated a Creters Popcorn Machine until spring, 1913. He was associated with the Virtue and Pound Implement Co., in Owatonna from 1913 until 1932. At that time, Bill and Myrtle moved to Faribault where he became a partner with E. P. Lynch in a John Deere Implement business. Upon the death of Lynch, Pirkl became the sole owner of the firm which was then known as the Pirkl Implement Co. He retired in 1967 when he sold the firm to Arnold Swenson and his son-in-law, Ivan Hale. Bill and Myrtle had one daughter, Marjorie, born on January 30, 1921, and a son who died as an infant. Myrtle died November 20, 1964, after many years of poor health. Bill died on January 13, 1978, at the age of 91.

They lived and farmed in Deerfield Township, Steele County, for many years. Mr. Pirkl died in 1976. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. John (RoseMary) Meyer, of Kasson; two sons, Harlow of rural Medford and Raymond of Owatonna; and seven grandchildren. __ The funeral services of Hubert Perkl, son-in-law of August Santo, were held in the Episcopalian church of this city Saturday afternoon. The cause of his death was consumption. For nine years he was engineer in the school for the deaf and dumb, in Faribault, but, his health failing, he was obliged to give up his position. He moved to Waseca last summer with his family and has gradually declined until death came. He leaves a wife and three small children to mourn his departure.

Patricia (Mrs. Bernard) Pirkl, age 67, of Faribault died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at the Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at 11:30 a.m. at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home in Faribault with Bernadette Tatge, Pastoral Minister at Divine Mercy Catholic Church officiating. Interment will be held at the Calvary Cemetery, Faribault.
Visitation will be held at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home in Faribault on Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. until the hour of services.
Patricia Ann Hruza, the daughter of Francis and Ethel (Bauernfeind) Hruza, was born on April 15, 1941, in Faribault. Pat attended Bethlehem Academy High School and graduated with the class of 1959. On Sept. 24, 1960, she was united in marriage to Bernard Pirkl at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Faribault. Pat worked for several years as a trainer at Control Data and then was a private contractor after Control Data closed. Pat was an excellent cook and loved all of her pets very much. She also enjoyed arts and crafts, sewing and gardening. Pat also loved to hunt but fishing was her passion.
She is survived by her husband, Bernard Pirkl, of Faribault; by her granddaughter, Angela Pirkl, and her great grandson, Antonio Lopez-Pirkl, both of Lakeville; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Mike Pirkl in 1980, her sister, Donna Smith, and her brother, Dick Hruza.

On Jan. 8, 1966, he married Mabel Lennon in Kenyon. Pirkl was associated with the Virtue and Pound Implement Co. in Owatonna from 1913 until 1932 when he purchased the interest of Wm. Musegades who was a partner with E. P. Lynch. In 1942, upon the death of Lynch, Pirkl became the sole owner of the firm until his retirement in 1967. He was a former member of the Faribault City Council. He is survived by his wife, Mabel; one daughter, Mrs. Ivan (Marjorie) Hale of Faribault; five grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren and three step-sons. He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant son, several brothers and sisters.

There will be a 6:30 p.m. Medford/Deerfield Knights of Columbus Rosary at the funeral home on Wednesday. The visitation will continue on Thursday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the Medford Funeral Home followed by a procession to Christ the King Church. Harlow was born on March 8, 1932 in Deerfield Township to Louis and Lucille (Curran) Pirkl. He attended school in Deerfield Township-District 42 plus 2 in Rural Steel County. Harlow was drafted in the Army on April 6, 1952 and was a medic. He was involved in the Korean conflict before being discharged in June of 1954. On April 15, 1961, he married Joan Wencl at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Litomysl.
The couple farmed in Deerfield Township raising their two children. Harlow worked at OMC, holding many different positions thought out the company, from 1965 until his retirement in 1994. He was an honorary life member of the Medford/Deerfield Knights of Columbus, a life member of VFW-Post 3723 in Owatonna and was also a lifelong member of the Corpus Christi Church as well as Christ the King Church in Medford. Harlows life interests included fishing, woodworking, playing cards, traveling with friends and spending time with his family.
Harlow is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joan, of Medford, and his children, Debbie (Jeff) Thorpe of Byron and Kristi (Steven) Haedtke of Winona; his grandchildren-Matthew, and Ryan Thorpe and Halle and Nicole Haedtke. His is also survived by his brother, Ray (Marion) Pirkl of Owatonna, and his sister, Rosemary (John) Meyer of Kasson, and many nieces and nephews. His parents, one niece, one nephew and two great nephews precede him in death.

They started farming in Shieldsville and later the North Morristown area. Dorothy preceded him in death on March 7, 2006. Bob enjoyed spending time with his family. Some of his hobbies and interest were fishing, bird watching, gardening, tending his flowers and mowing his lawn. He was a life long member of Trinity Lutheran Church, North Morristown and a member of the Morristown Community Club and American Legion Post #149, Morristown. Ray worked at Pure Oil, then, in April 1957, he started at Owatonna Tool Company as a machinist for the next 38 years. He also farmed while working at OTC. Ray retired from OTC on November 30, 1995. Ray was a long-time member of St. Joseph Church, Knights of Columbus, the Owatonna Eagles Club, and The American Legion. In Ray and Marions earlier years, the couple did quite a bit of traveling with Hawaii being their favorite destination. Ray always enjoyed watching his grandchildren at their sporting and scholastic events and enjoyed polka dancing and he belonged to the Polka club in the area. Ray also enjoyed being part of a bowling team. Survived by his wife of 64 years Marion, son Randy (Kelly) Pirkl of Owatonna, and daughter Renae (Brian) Humphries of Maple Grove, MN.
